D509.JAMES CORDINER, London 1807, A Description of Ceylon, Containing an Account of the Country, Inhabitants and Natural Productions; with Narratives of a Tour Round the Island in 1800, The Campaign in Candy in 1803, and a Journey to Ramisseram in 1804. Illustrated with 25 Engravings from Original Drawings.

Rev.James Cordiner was the late Chaplain to the Garrison at Columbo. The two volumes of text are full of interesting and descriptive comments. The sepia, stone lithograph plates are of a very high quality showing various scenes of local life and architecture (7'x9", except for two large folding ones of Trincomallee 12"x8"). Full page map of Ceylon, further town plan of Columbo. First edition, 2 volumes, generally in good and clean condition, just a few pages with brown spotting. Rebound with marble boards, leather spines and trim. (Abbey 409)

A superb folio book with lithographs by ACKERMANN, title page, 12 further views are; Fort of Colombo from galle Esplanade; The Galle-Face Esplanade from Middleburg; Adam's Peak & Lake Colombo; Lake of Colombo and Slave Island; Adam's Peak & Slave Island; Colpitty from Cinammon Gardens; Ferry House at Pantura; Buddhist Temples at Bolgodde; Ferry & Rest House Bentotte; Rock of Mulkirrigalle; Lake of Kandy; Great Elephant Kraal at Cottawya.

In original green cloth boards with gilt vignette of elephant, contents clean and good but with one plate expertly repaired to tear, small marginal repairs to two other plates, however, a very RARE book. (Abbey 414)
