Ref:339C (YUCATAN) JOHN L.STEPHENS, printed by Harper & Brothers New York 1843, Twelfth Edition, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan. Stephens was one of the most famous of explorers of Central America, these books are the first guides to the ruined cities of the Mayans, and he is credited with launching the field of archaeology of these people. He was born in 1805 in New York and originally spent his life in law and politics, but by 1834 he seeked the thrill of travelling to dangerous places and wrote several other books before his adventures to Central America. He took the British artist Frederick Catherwood with him and a selection of excellent drawings were made of the buildings etc., This set of books is now considered to be a classic and one of the most interesting on travels. Contains numerous steel engraved plates of the ruins, monuments, statues etc., Invaluable collectors item, in 2 volumes, tall 8vo, contents generally clean but with some age toning and mild foxing, as usual with this type of paper.

Ref:339D (YUCATAN) JOHN L.STEPHENS, printed by Harper & Brothers New York 1843, First Edition, Incidents of Travel in Yucatan. Stephens was forced to give up on his first expedition (see previous entry), the task was much greater than he had realised with about 44 sites in Yucatan alone to explore, plus Catherwood had suffered from malaria and had to return. Another expedition was organised resulting in this 2 volume set, tall 8vo, being another classic by Stephens and even surpasses his previous work. Noted as containing 120 engravings, again after Catherwood, these include superb folding panoramas of Labna (15"x7") and another of Uxmal (31"x8"), many of the famous places Chichen, Uxmal, Tulum etc., but also several of others noted by Stephens, that would shortly be lost into total ruin. (Unfortunately true today). Rebacked with original covers, contents generally clean but with age toning and mild foxing as usual. Map missing.
