A monumental voyage by this famous English explorer. He had already been to
the Pacific twice before and had mapped the Great Barrier Reef coast of Australia
and completed the charts of New Zealand. On this last voyage from 1776-1779
he set out in command of the Resolution and Discovery to search for the Northwest
Passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Sailed to Tasmania (Van Diemen), New
Zealand, Friendly (Tonga) and Society Isles (Tahiti). Discovered several islands
in the Cook Group and re-visited Tahiti. Discovered Sandwich islands (HAWAII).
Continued north to survey the Pacific Northwest Coast areas of Alaska, Bering
Straits, Nootka (Vancouver) then returned to Big Island of Hawaii where he was
killed on 14 February 1779.
Clerke now took command and returned to survey the Northwest Coast again but
died at sea, Gore and King brought the two ships back to England.
Shortly after the return of the Cook expedition to England, copies of the engravings
were smuggled out to Paris and a French issue of the third voyage was published
in Paris, 1785. The engravings by WEBBER (Official artist of the voyage) were
used by the French engraver BENARD, with French titles substituted. These were
of equal quality to the English edition, on good strong hand-made paper. Many
of the views are the first ever seen in Europe of the Pacific Islands, average
size: 15"x10" (some a bit larger/smaller, please ask for details),
good condition.
