(JAMAICA) JAMES HAKEWILL, London 1825, A Picturesque Tour of Jamaica, From Drawings Made in the Years 1820-1821. A fantastic book of 19 (of 21) views related to various plantations, Kingston, Montego Bay, Port Maria and the interior. Originally issued in parts, then re-arranged and bound as required. Now in extra cloth-bound box for protection. The views are of exceptional quality in full strong original colour (quite often they are faded), 13"x9", text leaf accompanies each plate. One plate mildly foxed, otherwise clean and good. Bookplate of Boies Penrose. Hakewill had intended to produce several more plates from his numerous paintings but the economy of the island was beginning to fade at this time. Collectors item as very few copies of the COMPLETE book are available. (Abbey 683) Plates missing are The Bridge at Spanish Town and Bryans Castle. |
