ROBERT BAKER, printed London 1748/9, A New and Exact Map of the Island of Antigua in America
According to an Actual Survey made in the Years 1746, 1747 & 1748. Describing the limits & Boundaries of the several
Parishes, with the Churches; also the Divisions with their respective Boundaries; high Roads, Jury Paths, the Situation of
every Gentleman's Plantation, Mill Works and Houses, with the Harbours, Bays; Creeks, Islands, Rocks, Shoals and Soundings
that surround the whole.
One of the most sought after of all Antigua maps, by the Surveyor General of Antigua, an exceptional copper plate engraving on four sheets with the decorative title running across top of page. This is flanked top right by large inset of English Harbour with Land for the Use of the Navy and several buildings at the Store Houses and Careening Place, and top left with dramatic cartouche dedicated to William Mathew Captain General and Governor in Chief. Each side of the map carries a long list of subscribers, lower centre has a cartouche scale below which reads Printed for Carrington Bowles in St. Pauls Church Yard & Robert Wilkinson in Cornhill. Price 10s 6d. Incredible detail to the main map area, giving names of each plantation owner, type of mill, number of houses etc.,
In excellent condition, minor brown spot under title, limited original outline colour to boundaries. Very rare, a collectors item.
