HAWAII REPRODUCTION PAGE

CASSINI map of hawaii

1. CASSINI map of Hawaii. An excellent reproduction of this famous Hawaiian map, being the first time Hawaii appeared in an atlas. The original copper plate engraving was published in Rome in 1798 at the Pressola Calcongrafia Camerale. This was based on the Capt.James Cook map of 1784, except that a vignette of the Death of Cook has been added, instead of the chart of Karakakooa Bay on the English version. The route taken by the Cook expedition is shown but some of the dates given are inaccurate. Printed area 19"x14", full colour $65.00

Capt. James Coook chart

2. CHARTE VON SANDWICH-INSELN Reproduction of a German edition, of the famous Capt.James Cook chart, originally issued between 1785-1790. No other chart of the Hawaiian Islands has the Webber engraving of the War Canoe, usually the left hand corner is given to a small inset chart of Karakakooa Bay on Hawaii, where Cook was killed. Track of Cook's expedition is shown. Scarce map, not listed in the reference books. Printed area 171/2"x11", full colour $65.00

3. KAUAI & NIIHAU by PETERMANN Fine hand-coloured reproduction of the original steel engraved map published in 1878 for the German Geographical Magazine, issued by A.Petermann. The first Government Survey of Kauai was not produced until 1878, so this map was obviously based upon that information. Divided into districts with notes of mountains and rivers. Anchoring places are noted at Haenea, Hanalei, Nawiliwili and Waimea. Suprisingly, Koloa Landing is not noted although it had been in use since 1840. Printed area 10"x8", outline hand colour, $65.00

4. KAUAI GOVERNMENT SURVEY Good reproduction of the first Government Survey of Kauai, published in 1878. This shows the island at a time when the land was still divided into Crown Lands held by the Hawaiian Monarchy of Kamehameha II for his private use, and the remainder being Public Land. Many of the places have old Hawaiian names. A railway runs from Waimea bay to Kekaha, the only sugar estate is Koloa Plantation and Lihue is justa series of Taro patches. Printed area 18"x13", full colour $65.00

8. CHARLES WILKES. 1846, Hanapepe Valley. An excellent view of this very famous waterfall (where they filmed Jurassic Park). Wilkes's party arrived at Hanapepe by horse from Koloa. They travelled up the valley about 8 miles to the falls, climed over the mountains to Hanalei and returned to Koloa landing. The falls look exactly the same today and are viewed on the helicopter trips. This print has been produced in black/white, then fully hand-coloured. 9"x14", matted. $85.00
